Success by 6 Powell River - Highlights to Fall 2006.

Champions for Children~ The Success By 6 Council of Partners brings together Champions for Children from across the region. Our team includes local more than 20 leaders, movers and shakers who are ready, willing and able to work together for the future of children and families in Powell River.

An Action Plan ~ Success By 6 has an evidence-based local action plan that guides our use of time and resources.

Support for all Powell River’s Children ~ Success By 6 has funded six projects and programs that work directly for local children. We have a comprehensive, locally designed and driven process in place for future funding allocations.

Engagement with Aboriginal Community ~ The Success By 6 Council of Partners includes key participation from Sliammon Fist Nation – both community members and organizational representatives. We recognize the unique needs of Sliammon families and children and appreciate the valuable contribution that the community and its philosophy of service delivery can make to the whole region. We support planning and resource development with time, energy and with targeted financial allocations.

Influence on Local Public Policy ~ Success By 6 worked with other individuals and groups to ensure that Official Community Plan for the City of Powell River saw the community through the eyes of a child. The need for outdoor play spaces, accessible services and family friendly development is mentioned in the OCP. This establishes a precedent for future social planning and development. We’ve also taken a lead in developing a local child care plan and strategy.

Public Awareness ~ We’ve accomplished regular local media coverage of issues of concern to families and children, wide participation in community events, and a major community-wide celebration of children: “Precious as Diamonds”.

Project Development ~ Success By 6 has participated in the development of successful project proposals, especially Understanding the Early Years. Currently we are working on an exciting new project. The ORCA Bus will bring resources and services out into the community, anywhere Powell River children are!

Fundraising and Friend-Raising ~ We’ve raised well over $30,000 in cash and in-kind support for our initiative to date!
