Projects

Powell River Success By 6 funded projects and initiatives

In 2005 and 2006, Success By 6 funded six different projects and an aboriginal community research initiative, and has distributed more than $29,000 into the community to support children and families; these projects include...

The Book Bag Exchange Program - Parents and Caregivers

The Book Bag Exchange is an early literacy program to help parents of children under 6 years develop their child's literacy skills so that they will be more prepared for school ... and for life.

Each book bag is filled with an age-appropriate book and one or more fun activities for parents and children to enjoy together. The Book Bag Exchange is a FREE and FUN program for families with children from birth to 6 years.

Come to the Family Place and borrow a book bag for a week or two, bring it back and borrow another one, and so on. There are 36 book bags to choose from and each one is unique.

Bag-A-Book: Literacy Resources for ECD Practitioners program

Early literacy is a critical elemental in readying a child for kindergarten, in developing language and cognitive ability, as well as ensuring that children carry a love for reading and literature throughout their life. Early Child Development practitioners are keenly aware of the importance of early childhood literacy and, like busy educators everywhere, value a service that streamlines the preparation process for programs.

Toward that end the Public Library now holds 35 special storytelling and instructional kits available for the exclusive use of ECD practitioners. Each kit features a book with puppets or props supporting the theme of the kit. For example Leo the Late Bloomer explains how some people (or in this case lions) develop at a different pace and that eventually we all make it successfully. “Just Enough Carrots” is a math story with large plastic carrots for counting and a sheet of suggestions for ramping up your counting theme.

The kits are available for loan on a long term basis. Please contact Stephanie Hall, Chief Librarian or Jeannette Jones, Library Technician at the Public Library for more information.

Understanding the Early Years - Social Marketing

Understanding the Early Years (UEY) is a national initiative that enables members of communities across Canada to better understand the needs of their young children and families so that they can determine the best programs and services to meet those needs. The focus of UEY is community capacity building using local research on young children.

In Powell River Success By 6 has provided support to Understanding the Early Years - Sunshine Coast (UEY-SC) for a media public awareness campaign to help inform the community about the importance of the early years for local kids.

Lund Play Group

Volunteers established this weekly play group at the Lund Community Centre, and saw participation from local families grow and grow. Success By 6 funds helped the group purchase resources and pay a facilitator.

Tla’Amin Community Health

With Success By 6 funding Tla’Amin Community Health undertook a scan of services and survey of needs to help identify gaps and priorities for program planning. The results of this study will help guide the use of further resources available to our community through the provincial Aboriginal Engagement Strategy funds.
