Bond Sound Tour - An all day trip to Bond Sound by speedboat up beautiful Tribune Channel with knowledgeable Bill Proctor. Bond Sound is the only unlogged watershed in the mainland coast, and still supports all five species of wild Pacific salmon. Wildlife sitings en route can include Pacific White Sided dolphins, otters, seals, killer whales, bears, and cougars. Short stops at amazing waterfalls, Aboriginal rock paintings and ancient cedar trees. August and September are the best months to see the salmon run. Picnic lunch provided for this awesome wilderness day.
Bird Watching Tour - Join me for the monthly Bird Count for Bird Studies Canada data bank. We circle the Burdwood Group and go into the head of Viner Sound and up the Viner River, keeping tabs on the populations of winter, summer, and migrating birds. The beautifully decorated Harlequin ducks are one of our major summer breeding residents and it is always a thrill to observe a new family. Wintering Trumpeter swans in Viner have all left except for one wounded bird that seems to be doing alright now. This tour takes two to three hours and depends on the high tide.
Wildlife Watch Tour to Sea Lion Rocks and Twin Lagoon - An exciting speedboat ride through the tidal narrows into Twin Lagoon where you can explore the little islands and life in a saltwater lagoon. At the mouth of Fife Sound, hang around the sea-lion haul-out for a while and hear why they are called sea lions. This is an all-day trip with a picnic lunch somewhere on an island.
Hike Shoal Harbor Creek - A good walk to stretch your legs and explore a small stream. Watch for salmon fry, interesting flowers, ferns, moss and fungi that line the banks of a small stream. You might even see a wolf if one lets you.
Hike Scott Cove Creek - Walk beside the banks of the roaring stream that empties the salmon spawning watershed of Gilford Island. Learn about the historical impact of the first loggers and community efforts to rebuild the salmon runs with our salmon hatchery, run by volunteers of Mainland Enhancement of Salmonid Species Society.
Bill Proctors Museum and Local Art - The best collection of Aboriginal, logging, fishing, trapping and domestic artifacts outside the BC Provincial Museum. The museum captures the history of all the people and the activities of the mainland coast. Learn how life here is shaped by the environment. This visit can take a couple of hours and is a nice afternoon or evening outing.
